Day 2
At 09:00, after we take our breakfast in the hotel we depart by bus for the tour of the island. We will visit Foinikas on the West side of the island alongside Megas Gialos, Vari and Azolimnos on the South side. We will see the towers – mansions at Poseidonia (Ntelagkratsia), which was the favorite holiday resort of the wealthy ship and factory owners of the last century. We will make a stop in a traditional delights workshop, where we can watch the process of making the famous Syros delights and halvadopita, to taste the fresh products and head with the bus for the Medieval settlement of Ano Syros. In Ano Syros we will wander in the quaint alleys and we will visit the building that formerly housed the Seminary (1837), where the historical archive of the Catholic Diocese of Syros is in display, with relics and rare manuscripts from the 16th century, the monastery of the Capuchins with the Church of St. John (1635), Jesuit monastery with the Church of Our Lady of Carmel (1740) that has a library with thousands of books, historical documents, parchments and rare manuscripts, the unique Orthodox churches of Ano Syros of «St. Trinity» and «St. Nicholas» the poor, the exhibition of the historical archive of Ano Syros, the folk art Museum, the exhibition of traditional crafts and of course the Markos Vamvakaris Museum housed at his residence, renovated in 1995 which displays personal belongings and testimonials from the life of the great composer of Rebetiko and is located next to the square named by him. We sit down to rest in cafes with stunning view and then we board our coach to visit Hermoupolis. Hermoupolis, an administrative and economic centre of Cyclades, has many major attractions and interesting museums. We will go the the city and visit the City Hall, located in Miaouli square in the city centre which is a living museum project of the German architect Ziller and one of the biggest City Halls in Greece. It is an impressive building that looks more like a palace, as Ziller designed it as he imagined the Palace of Priam. Behind the City Hall we will see the first Gymnasium of free Greece which opened in 1833 and many great Greeks as Eleftherios Venizelos and Petros Protopapadakis studied here. We will take a look at the Apollo Theatre built in 1862-64, with the impressive interior, which is a miniature of Scala di Milano. We will wander the picturesque paved with marble and granite city streets and we will arrive in the district Vaporia, a genuine neoclassical architectural neighborhood with wonderful urban mansions of the 19th century, with ornate decor, marble walls and huge wooden doors. In Vaporia stands the imposing church of Saint Nicholas, founded in 1848. Here you will see the unique monument of “The unburied Greek fighter”, a work of the great Greek sculptor G. Vitali (1880). Hermoupolis is a vibrant city where a lively, colorful and attractive traditional market could not be absent. There we will be left free and tamper with the crowd, giving appointment in an hour for the very interesting last visit of the day to the Temple of the Assumption (1828) where the homonymous famous picture of El Greco is displayed.
